Government College Ibadan

Founded on 28 February 1929 on the hills of Apata Ganga, Ibadan, Government College Ibadan (GCI) stands as one of Nigeria's most prestigious and historic secondary schools. Conceived by Selwyn MacGregor Grier, Director of Education for the Southern Provinces, and modelled on the great British public boarding schools of the era, GCI opened its doors to just 29 pioneering students in May of that founding year.

For nearly a century, GCI has been a crucible of excellence — producing leaders in law, medicine, engineering, literature, politics, and public service. Its motto, "Learning to Serve," has guided generations of Old Boys who have gone on to shape Nigeria and the world.

Among its most celebrated alumni is Professor Wole Soyinka, the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (1986), alongside distinguished statesmen, jurists, scholars, and captains of industry.
